Wordpress.com vs. Wordpress.org
August 14th, 2007
Have you ever seen someone mention Wordpress.com and wonder exactly what it is? Or maybe you know what it is, but would like to know more about the difference between it and Wordpress.org?  More than likely most of the blogs you read regularly are using the free open source software available at Wordpress.org, which allows users with their own web hosting to have their own website without the costs of web hosting and such.
For those who haven’t used it, Wordpress.com is a free service that has a lot of nice qualities, but requires the user to live with several limitations. Quick Online Tips has taken the time to collect 15 benefits and limitations of the Wordpress.com blogs to help people wanting to know more about the service, and how it compares to Wordpress.org.
Some notable limitations:
- No Advertising
- No Plugins
- Limited Theme Changes
I personally recommend a free Wordpress.com blog to people looking to practice blogging prior to spending any money.  This way they can see if it is something they like before making any investment into web hosting. They can then easily transfer their posts once they’ve decided to switch to Wordpress.org.

I do not prefer Wordpress.com for the simple fact that you cannot customize the theme, blogger gives you more power on that and even in advertising.
I agree with you Kyle. Wordpress blogs (even on wordpress.com) have a certain air of authority to them that blogger doesn’t have. By imposing restrictions, wordpress say “Blog because you want to, not to make money.”.
Nirmal – In my example, I was more referencing people looking to move to WordPress. I think it is important when people start blogging, that they don’t worry about monetizing (I didn’t place my first ad until 9 months after I started this blog) and instead focus on actually developing blogging skills and being sure they have the interest in becoming a blogger. If you aren’t planning to move to WordPress eventually, I usually recommend Blogger, although I don’t think people can be taken seriously as a blogger if they use Google’s Blogger platform.
Rhys – I agree!
I agree with you. But i prefer to use some free hosting and installed WP there.
I was using wordpress.com to power by website, but I want to make money off my website.
Didn’t know there was a wordpress.org. I would have thought wordpress would have registered all domains extensions with wordpress… wow.
Spyware – WordPress.org is where we go to get our open source blogging software. WordPress.com is with their hosting and has restrictions, but it is free.
