Wordpress Plugins: Personalize Your Comments with Avatars
July 14th, 2007
[This post is being written as a continuation of the discussion happening in the comments of Rhys' post, which among other things discusses which avatars plugin to use.]
There are a lot of different ways to spice up your comments on your site, but my favorite has to be the personalized touch of having an avatar appear next to each person’s comments. If you’re a Wordpress user, you are in luck, because this is incredibly easy to do. The benefits are numerous, but in my opinion the most important benefit is personal branding, which allows readers to easily associate your comments with you. This is why I usually recommend that you use a picture of your site’s favicon or something memorable instead of a personal picture of yourself.
So, does adding an avatar sound good to you? The next step is to pick what type of avatar you want to use. I’ve tried three different types, and in their current states I currently recommend using the MyAvatars plugin. This plugin looks at the commentators information and matches it up with their MyBlogLog profile. It then places their MyBlogLog avatar next to their comment, allowing users to easily indentify the comments with the person writing them. The reason I prefer this plugin is because it seems to cause the fewest problems with my sites load time and also seems to get the fewest number of blank avatars. If for some reason you don’t like MyAvatars, their are two other good choices.
The first alternative option is Favatars, which is a favicon plugin that will look at the URL used in your comment and add the favicon from that site next to your comments. This is nice, but there are many sites that don’t have a favicon.
Your second alternative option is the Gravatar plugin, which works just like MyAvatars, except it uses your Globally Recognized Avatar (Gravatar). I originally ran this plugin for a few months and it was very rare that someone actually had a Gravatar, so I quickly replaced it. If this plugin interests you, here is a review I did before switching to MyAvatars. A quick Google search will also show a few other versions of Gravatar plugins available if you like have gravatars on your site.
No matter which plugin you end up choosing, I definitely recommend having some sort of avatar with your comments. Which one do you prefer?

The MyAvatars Plugins sounds the easiest, but its link is broken. ??
Mark – Thanks for pointing this out. There wasn’t a problem with the link, but it looks like the author moved it recently (I copied the link over from my Wordpress plugins list, which was made about 6 months ago).
I have updated the link in the above post, or you can click here. Thanks for the heads up!
I’m using MyAvatars plugin, I feel its the best for avatars.
I will install this on my next redesign .
Is it just me or does the link take you to a page that is in another language?
And does anyone else have like 3,897 plugins installed on their site?
Nirmal – I agree!
Madhur – Look forward to it. The plugin is more fluff than anything, but I think it is great for bloggers to have it when possible.
Coolio – The site is done in another language, but there are English instructions included if you scroll down a bit. And it doesn’t matter what the author speaks because php code is all the same!
Oh, and I only have 2,468 plugins installed, so you’ve got me beat!
Gravatar ruled some time back but now everyone uses myavatars
I’m happy sticking with my favicons, a lot of my readers have favicons on their site, and don’t have gravatars and mybloglog avatars. I was open to change though, and if anybody wanted to change to mbl or gravatars, then I was willing to reconsider.
Thanks for linking… Well I’m happy to tell you that there’s a new version of MyAvatars now, with some “requested-by-users” bug-fix.
You (and your readers) can read about it here
RAM – It does seem that most have made the switch and I think it is definitely an improvement. MyAvatars also supports Gravatars for the old schoolers out there!
Rhys – The great thing about WordPress are the choices available, whether it is a theme or plugin or whatever. It would be boring if we all used the same plugins
Napolux – Thanks for the heads up on this! I have made the upgrade!
For some reason I can’t get these avatars to work right when I comment with the user name “Baz L”.
I set up an account for someone else recently and I’m experiencing the same sort of problem.
Anyone have any ideas?
Sorry,
I forgot to subscribe to comments. Also, I changed the username to illustrate my point.
