Wordpress Plugin: Know Your Alexa Ranking

AlexaThe past couple weeks we’ve debated the value of Alexa’s traffic ranking system on this site, but we’ve also covered the importance of knowing and working to improve your sites Alexa ranking.

Many people choose to display an Alexa widget on their sidebar as a way to improve their Alexa ranking, but some people would prefer not to for several reasons ranging from their site having a high ranking (high is bad) to not liking the look of the widget.

For those people, there is now a Wordpress plugin available that will insert your Alexa ranking into your Wordpress Dashboard where you can monitor it privately.  Simply upload it and activate and it should appear in your dashboard within 24 hours.

  1. Thanks for the plugin!

I am definitely going to install it as I still wish to improve my alexa ratings as much as possible!

  2. Apex,

    Glad you found it useful!

It won’t help you improve your Alexa ranking itself, but it will help you see the progress you are making ;)

  3. Kyle: Curious if you’ve heard about this. I just popped into Johntp.com a while ago and there’s talk of adding an Alexa script that executes on your page and thus boosts your Alexa ranking. Have you heard of such a thing or are folks misunderstanding the function of the Alexa plugins that are out there?

  4. Robert,

I do read John’s site but have not seen that yet. I’ll probably look it over later tonight in my feed reader.

From my understanding, Alexa only calculates each IP address once, so people visiting a site multiple times each day will not get “credit” for it from Alexa as a hit.

However, people (like myself) place the Alexa widget on their sidebar so that its on each page of the website because then each time the page loads when someone visits, it registers their IP address as a visit with Alexa because the widget has to go grab the information. This is a common tactic to raise your Alexa ranking and has worked well for me so far.

In my opinion, this is probably what they are talking about. I think it would be nice to have an actual script that worked behind the scenes so you wouldn’t have to display the widget, which is kind of an eyesore on the sidebar in my opinion.

  5. I’ve seen one other person doing this but it made me think. Have you though about linking your logo to your homepage via your alexa redirect link? When people click your logo or homepage link they are redirected through alexa passing on traffic info to them, thus increasing your ranking. I’m not sure if there is anything wrong with doing that as real humans are producing the traffic. Of course you would still have your static footer link linking to your homepage so you bring your pagerank back through your site. Wondering your thoughts on that?

    Regards,

    Jeff

  7. This is a great post, fortunately 70% of the time of website owner is consumed in experimenting towards increasing page rank and alexa rank. To start with increasing page rank one must start with downloading Alexa toolbar for IE or firefox on as many system possible. as a second step alexa widget on every page of your website, by this way every webpage opened is counted while calculating rank inspite is user does not have alexa toolbar installed knowtheworldaround.com
