WordPress Tip: Improve Production with Keyboard Shortcuts
July 22nd, 2007
I know many of my readers use WordPress. Were you aware that you can use shortcuts when writing a post in the WordPress Rich Text editor? Thanks to TipMonkies, here is a list of keyboard shortcuts:
- Bold: Alt+SHIFT+b
Italics: Alt+SHIFT+i
Link: Alt+SHIFT+a
Blockquote: Alt+SHIFT+q
Code: Alt+SHIFT+c
Read More: Alt+SHIFT+t
Unordered List (ul): Alt+SHIFT+u
Ordered List (ol): Alt+SHIFT+o
List Item (li): Alt+SHIFT+l
Note: These shortcuts may not work in some browsers exactly like they do in the text editor’s menu buttons.

Hehe, you know, I’ve been using WP for a couple of years now and I had no idea that there were shortcuts! Thanks.
aahh.. Shortcuts.. Always handy
Knew just the basic first two :p
Oo. Didn’t know the blockquote one. Thanks for the head’s up!
I never actually use the rich text editor because it screws up my pre-formatted HTML code more than it helps it. I use Post2Blog (it is now free) as my blogging software, and then any editing/adjustments that I make on the site is done using the classic editor where I can edit the HTML in my post without having to worry about the rich text editor unexpectedly changing it.
Ryan – You never use the Rich Text Editor? I’ve considered using blogging software, but I use 3-4 different computers when blogging, so it makes it difficult to blog from my desktop.
I usually write them in the Rich Text Editor, then afterwards I go to the classic editor and manually make formatting adjustments to get the look I want.
Have you tried Windows Live Writer since they released 2.0?
I don’t know why but I hate the Rich Text Editor that WordPress uses. There is word out that they will be replacing it with a new light-weight text editor in a future version. It just seems to muck things up more than it helps. Then again I’m pretty fluent with HTML so I like to control every aspect of my posts.
I’ve tried Windows Live Writer, but it doesn’t use valid XHTML in posts. If it did that I would probably use it because it has several nice features…and some of the plugins are pretty nice.
That would be amazing if they re-did the Rich Text Editor. The one Typepad has is much better.
I’m getting pretty good with HTML, so I know how you feel. Sometimes when making site changes, it is tempting to just use HTML than find it in the stylesheet and make the change.
WLW is one of the things Microsoft has going for them, so I’m sure 3.0 is in the works
Thanks for sharing, Kyle. I love shortcuts
