What Stuff Do You Bookmark?
September 3rd, 2007
As with everything else, a couple of years ago the world began to move their bookmarks online with the invention of social bookmarking sites like Del.icio.us and Yahoo’s MyWeb2. Since then, those of us that prefer to have our bookmarks private (like myself), now also have the option of using a service like Google Bookmarks, which conveniently uses your Google account.
With this process of moving everything online and the invention of tagging bookmarks to allow for easy and convenient organization, came the habit of bookmarking all sorts of things we normally wouldn’t if we were saving them in our browser. A quick browsing of the most popular bookmarks on a daily basis tends to show a lot of weird bookmarks like funny pictures, recaps of sporting events, and current events.
I personally prefer to use my bookmarks for guides and reference material that I will likely want to view again at some point in the future. I also use it to keep a few web-based games I play regularly, log in portals to my online financial data, porn I view regularly (just kidding!), and forums that I read regularly. I try to avoid adding things that won’t still be useful a week later. This helps me to avoid getting overwhelmed when I go to check my bookmarks and get flooded with a lot of outdated posts.
What do you use your web-based bookmark accounts for?

I rarely use my bookmarks on a daily basis. I normally just use diigo to save my stuff. When I need to refer back to them for an article, that’s when I do a search by tag and locate the things I need.
I don’t really use them in the traditional way either, but they do make good backends for link projects and blogs.
I dont use online bookmarking directly. First I save all bookmarks using firefox bookmarks and then backup the whole bunch every week at del.icio.us in case of emergencies
Oh and congrats for winning the logo contest at DBT, Kyle!
I’m a little old school actually, I bookmark sites the old way without using a third party service. What do I like to bookmark?
Mostly tools and script related resources; i.e. places I visit often.
Vijay – Wow, that is an interesting method. Sounds like keeping a backup is a good idea
Oh, and thanks! There are a few things I don’t like about this site, and the lack of logo/header area is one of them that needs some work. I was thrilled!
I bookmark all of the time, I bookmark everything that I want to read from my RSS feeds, so I go through all of them in one sitting, starring things that I want to read, then bookmark all of those stars putting them into folders according to what they are about, then I use them later for blogging or read them for my own knowledge.
I also have bookmarks for all of my financial stuff and a few social networks that I visit regularly.
I don’t think I could live without the ability to bookmark.
