Tips For Picking a Popular Niche For A New Blog
February 25th, 2008
Whenever you start a new blog, it is extremely important to spend a little time researching before purchasing a domain name, picking a design, and launching the blog. Before getting started, you’ll first need to find the right niche for your blog. This is often easier said than done. Even if you know what you want to talk about, sometimes you are better off looking for a more focused keyword within the same niche.
If you are interested in learning more about how to research your niche, Copyblogger has posted some great tips on niche keyword research and provides some examples of a keyword hunt that was recently done. This is probably one of the better write ups covering niche keyword strategy.
How much research do you do before launching a new blog?

I try to do competition research so I know what they are doing to be successful than I try to do what they are doing and then something they are not.
Or in some cases it’s something the competitor is doing that is holding them back then in that case I leave that step out.
I have also jumped in to a niche without any research and wasted lots of time and even some money, but don’t tell my clients I would ever do something so silly.
I’m thinking of converting Indianajoned.com into a fairly static blog with an update here and there about the new movie.
I was wondering if you thought that it would work if I wrote all my static content using researched keywords surrounding the subjects. I am completely new to trying to target search engines so it really confuses me :s
Just been over to that link you added and it’s very interesting and possibly helpful for what I need to do.
Thanks a lot. Garry Conn has always been pushing Micro Niche Finder and I am very close to buying it but worried that I won’t quite know how to use it once it’s in my hands!
Hell, I have no focus for my blog and thanks for that link to niche keyword research. Its hard to know what people want when you have no readers! I think I just have a lot of soul searching to do and find out what I like best about my broad niche…
Thanks,
Toki
@ James – Yeah, research is probably the most important part, but then you need a little luck. I found a nice niche and one site I started two weeks ago already makes about $2.00 a day in AdSense. I generally start several and only keep the ones that are successful. The others I let go.
@ Forest – Static sites are okay, but blogging software has built-in SEO advantages. I recommend you leave it in more of a blog format, but maybe try to adjust the look to be more static. Then have the front page display new posts there. Hope that makes sense!
I personally use Micro Niche Finder in my research. There are free alternatives, but they don’t do quite as much as MNF. It is probably worth the cost if you are going to really apply yourself over time to filling micro niches. It is VERY easy to use.
@ Toki – It really depends on your focus. When you are filling micro niches, you probably don’t want readership, just traffic (big difference!).
I really do close to none, but then again – I don’t know that I can say I’ve started really serious niche blogs. Well, you know, I may have just lied. For this new one I’m kinda launching, I did probably a couple hours of kw work on it. So *shrugs* yeah.
Forest, there should be no worry bud. You know you can email, IM or call me and I’ll help you learn how to use the program. It’s real easy but I am sure you’ll have a few questions and I’ll have no problems speaking with you about it.
