The Costs of Leaving Your Computer On
February 17th, 2007
Have you ever wondered how much you are spending in electricity costs by leaving your computer(s) and servers powered on overnight?Â
I’ve often wondered this myself.  Last year, Jeff Atwood of Coding Horror took the time to determine the costs of leaving your computer on, and I think you’ll be surprised to see how much this is costing you. Jeff also looks at ways to lower your electricity costs. Â
I don’t even want to think about what I spend powering 4 computers, charging two laptops, a router, a modem, and my various other gadgets.  As an online gamer, I also have pretty intense video cards and generally use the brightest settings my computer will allow.  I will definitely be rethinking the way I have some things set up!Â

I knew it was expensive, but I didn’t know how much!!
At least all my computers fold proteins for a cancer cure.. Yeah.. That’s how I will justify it :0)

Jason,
I like your thought process. You’re always the eternal optimist!
LOL… I knew it was expensive when I started building computers for hobby/business and ordered the power supplies. 400 Watts, 500 Watts, etc.. that is quite a bit of juice… a microwave oven is 1500 Watts, the average oven is about 4000 Watts, and it doesn’t take a rocket science to view your bill and run the conversions to figure out exactly how much money it costs to keep your computer on all the time…
LOL!!!
My only excuse is that I hate waiting for my computer to load up when I turn it on! And it makes a killer night light! LMAO!!! An expensive one too!
But you never know… my floating windows xp logo on the screen could save my foot one day (or night) when I stumble out of bed for a late night snack…
