Blog Tip: Register Your Blog’s Name on Twitter
Whether you personally use Twitter or not, the way the internet is evolving means you should at a minimum be registering your blog’s name on Twitter and publishing a link to your posts there. This is not only smart business and can leverage additional traffic, but it can also save you a lot of headaches in the future.
If you are wondering why this is so important for someone who may not use Twitter, here are a few important reasons:
- Generates Traffic - There are many people who rarely check their RSS feeds these days, but they will follow your website on Twitter. I don’t know that Twitter will ever completely replace the RSS feed, but for many individuals it already has (myself included for the most part). There are others who will retweet your updates and fetch you additional traffic as well. By not offering your content on Twitter, you are losing exposure for your website/blog.
- Brand Recognition - It is reasonable for someone to believe that if they go to twitter.com/yourwebsitename that they will see your website. If they don’t, they may have trouble finding your tweets.
- Prevents Impersonation - Because many people were late to the Twitter party, there are millions of accounts which are “parked” where someone saves the name with the intention of selling it at some point (there are already services setup where people can buy/sell Twitter accounts). That is the best case scenario. We are currently dealing with someone who has our Twitter account (that matches our domain name) and is impersonating that website with it. We now have no control over the brand until we can get Twitter to turn the account over to us.
Those of course are the major reasons, but I’m sure there are plenty of other options. If you haven’t already, go out and sign up for the corresponding account of each of your web properties to be sure you have control over your name and your followers have access to your content! I currently manage 16 different Twitter accounts and use Seesmic Desktop (free desktop software) to easily manage them all!

An Update And Committing Myself to Twitter…
Some of you may have noticed that the posting schedule here has been umm…..light lately. While I’ve tried to maintain a posting schedule here of at least twice a week, circumstances have required most of my attention to be shifted towards some of my other projects that I’ve tried to get up and running.
Most of my blogging time has been committed to maintaining Hack WordPress because it brings in about 85% of my online income. For those that enjoyed my discussions on domaining and developing domain names, I’ve moved most of these types of posts to their own spot over to Slick Domains, which is the business name I operate my domain profile under. Lastly, for anyone else that has Celiac Disease (or knows someone that does) and has an interest in reading about that kind of stuff, I’ve launched a site called Gluten Free Resource. This site will house all things related to Celiac and living Gluten Free, including recipes, restaurant locations, etc.
So, that is what I’ve been up to. I’m hoping to resume my regular posting schedule here in the next couple weeks. I’m planning on discussing more of the usual topics, including Firefox 3.0, niche blogging, affiliate marketing, etc. If there is anything you want to get my take on, please post it below.
In the meantime, I’m going to be making an extra effort to keep my Twitter account up to date for anyone that wants to keep up with me. I know I wasn’t a big Twitter fan before (and its still slowly growing on me), but that has changed a little. Now that I’m managing so many things, I’ve started to really see the value of Twitter. If you’re interested, you can follow my Twitter updates from my profile page. Also, if you have a Twitter account, please post your details in a comment below so I can follow your updates as well.
