Flock 1.0 Is Now Available For Download
In you Flockstars missed it, it looks like Flock 1.0 was quietly released to the public for download. It doesn’t look like you get the update through your browser, but instead you visit the site, click download and extract the file that it downloads.
Unfortunately I haven’t had a chance to play around on this new release yet. According to the release notes, it looks like included in this update are a few welcome additions for social networking users:
- Flock 1.0 has added a “People” sidebar to support new service integration with Facebook and Twitter.
- Flickr and Youtube have been promoted to “People” services.
- Several performance and stability enhancements have been implemented and several memory leaks have been fixed.
If you’ve tried this new version out, let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
Technology Talk - 11/04/2007
Sunday is the day of rest here at Kyle’s Cove, so I decided, as usual, to post a weekly round up of some great posts I really enjoyed from found around the blogosphere. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did!
- PC World blogger Harry McCracken has posted about his new favorite web browser. Included is a nice review of Flock 1.0, including more about Facebook integration. Webware has also posted a nice newbies guide to Flock 1.0.
- PC World has also posted the 10 biggest web annoyances. They’ve done a great job of tackling all the issues currently facing today’s internet.
- CyberNet News talks a bit about Leopard vs. Windows Vista. I hope to be purchasing a new computer soon, so I am tracking these Leopard reviews pretty carefully.
- Karthik at Shankri-La has explained how to turn off the Feedburner redirect in your RSS feed. This will allow you to see actual URL’s in your feed reader, rather than the redirect, which is useful for linking and such.
- Mark Evans points out that the next logical step for Apple is a video game console. I’ve given this a lot of thought lately and reading Mark’s post makes me think it is even more likely to happen eventually. There are to many Apple fanboys and to much money left on the table for Apple to not join this market. There success with the iPhone shows they could make a good video gaming console and compete right away.
Flock 1.0 Beta Is Now Available
Well, I guess it is web browser week here at Kyle’s Cove, which means it has been a great week for me! First I talked a bit about Netscape 9.0 and Firefox 2.0, then Firefox 3.0, and now I get to write a brief post about Flock 1.0, which just recently became available to beta testers.
It looks like some bloggers have already been playing around with it and have written some reviews. So far, most of the reviews have been very encouraging for Flock fans. The only big negative I’ve found was from CyberNet News, where Ryan found some performance problems. It seems to take Firefox’s resource hogging problems to a whole new level.
This is one of the problems with building your browser on top of another browser. Flock is basically taking an existing browser along with its memory leak problems and then adding a bunch of social stuff on top of it. These new features look great, but if you aren’t a big user of social services, why would you use Flock?
If you’ve tried out the beta already, I’ve love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
Flock 1.0 Is Formally Announced
It wasn’t to long ago that Flock released version 0.9, which quickly raised the bar when it comes to 2nd generation web browsers. Now it looks like only 3 months later, they are getting ready to hit their next milestone with Flock 1.0, which was just announced at TechCrunch40.  So far, from what I’ve read, it looks pretty good!
Want to try Flock? You can check out their private beta to get a peak at what is in store for us with this next version of Flock, or check out Webware’s post with some more information.
Technology Talk - 07/14/2007
It has been about a week since I’ve done a new edition of technology talk, so here is some stuff that I found interesting while browsing the blogosphere this week:
- Machinist celebrates the computer virus’ 25th birthday this year. It all started in 1981 with a virus called Elk Cloner on an Apple II machine (figures Apple is responsible
).  Click over to read more about this fascinating story. - MobileJones tells the story of Google writing a bad check.  Thats right! Google’s Adsense account had insufficient funds to process the payment. Â
- Mashable covers 40+ Resources for Managing Your Money Online.  I’ve started to use some of these services for managing my money, so I found this post to be particularly useful.
- Shankrila features some new Firefox extensions.  I’m a little out of touch lately with the latest Firefox extensions, so I often rely on Karthik and others to keep me up to date. Secure Login is one that looks very useful, so I’ve decided to give it a try.Â
- Nirmal covers 5 reasons he likes Flock. I’ve only got a few very minor complaints, otherwise I like Flock too.  Look for an updated Ultimate Guide on this site later this weekend.Â
- MeandMyDrum covers the latest in the MyBlogLog community message controversy. I think their interaction with users and willingness to make adjustments is what makes MyBlogLog a great company.  Â
Flock 0.9 Is Now Available To Download
Last week I talked a bit about beta testing for Flock 0.9 and promised that it would impress those that enjoyed previous versions of Flock.
I was pleased to see today that Flock 0.9 is now available for download to everyone. This will include all of the Firefox 2.0 updates, as well as a similar yet new look and a few new features. In addition to the new browser, it looks like Flock.com has been given an incredible new design.
If you find that you use a lot of social websites or have enjoyed previous versions of Flock, I definitely recommend giving this browser a good look. So far it is getting good reviews. I also ran across a good write up by Leslie Franke that should answer a lot of your questions.
The bad news is now I have to update my Ultimate Guide to Using Flock. Hopefully I can get that done this weekend.
For those excited about Firefox 3.0 going to beta, it looks like Mozilla has delayed the browser going to beta for a few months. We can expect an Alpha 7 and possibly even an Alpha 8 before we get to the beta phase.  If a delay gets a better working beta with a working Places feature, I’m all for the delay.  I’ll be enjoying Flock 0.9 in the meantime!
