Awhile ago we talked about the Vista Transformation pack, which allows Windows XP users to easily give their computer the look and feel of Windows Vista.  Well, now it looks like Apple fans that have Windows XP on one of their computers have an option as well, with the release of the MAC OS X Transformation Pack to give their computer a Leopard makeover.

The files included with the download:

Windows Live Writer Finally Leaves Beta

If you are a Windows Live Writer user, you probably are still using the beta version of WLW.  It looks like now you can use this Windows Live Installer to upgrade your blogging software to the non-beta version of Windows Live Writer.

If you run into problems with the upgrade, you can use the Windows Live Writer Uninstaller to remove your old software before installing the non-beta version.

Microsoft Releases Microsoft Sync Framework

How does that old saying go? If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em? Unfortunately for Microsoft, that has been there motto for the last couple of years as they continue to struggle to keep up with Google.

There is no doubt that the recent release of Google Gears by Google has the potential to be revolutionary because it allows people to take their web-based services offline. For those that travel, this is a truly invaluable feature that allows for people to still work while on airplanes or other places that don’t have internet access. Microsoft doesn’t have quite the web-based stable of services that Google does, but I think they sure took notice of the possibilities that Google has now with Google Gears, so they decided to create Microsoft Sync Framework. Yikes! That name doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue, does it?

According to ZDNet:

Based on descriptions posted by Microsoft to its download site, the new framework will enable collaboration and offline capabilities for any application. It will roam and share information from “any data store, over any protocol, and over any network configuration,” according to the company. Microsoft has built and is making available to interested testers a reusable provider for synchronizing the contents of file system directories on PCs and removable media, such as USB thumb drives, according to the Web site.

I’m assuming they will target some non-Microsoft web-based services, as they don’t really have a lot of web-based services to use it with right now.

Is Facebook the Next Google?

If you look back to the late 1990’s, the internet looked a lot different than it does today. Microsoft was the dominant company, Yahoo! was just getting started, and Google was just getting ready to be created. In the years since, Microsoft became content with their role in the world of internet/software and shifted their focus to growing their presence in other areas (Xbox, Zune, etc.). While they were off exploring new territory, Yahoo! thrived and Google swooped in and took over the internet.

Now Google seems to be untouchable in many of the same ways as Microsoft did close to a decade ago. But is it possible that history will yet again repeat itself? Who is going to step in and take over the internet?

If you look at the roots of Google starting out in a garage, you can probably see many similarities with another company that is just now starting to gain some steam. That company is Facebook, and I’m telling you they are here to stay. They’ve got the humble beginnings, they have the sexy product that has the potential to generate a lot of income, and apparently they are also a great company to work for.

Recently there has been a trend of Google employees leaving for greener pastures with Facebook, and these employees aren’t being quiet on their way out the door. Among the many comments have been made by these employees making the switch is this telling comment from ex-Google employee Justin Rosenstein:

“A couple of months ago, after three years as a Google product manager, I decided to leave for Facebook. I am writing this note to spread Good News to all the friends I haven’t already overwhelmed with my enthusiasm: Facebook really is That company. Which company? That one. That company that shows up once in a very long while — the Google of yesterday, the Microsoft of long ago. (…) That company that’s on the cusp of Changing The World, that’s still small enough where each employee has a huge impact on the organization, where you think about working now and again, and where you know you’ll kick yourself in three years if you don’t jump on the bandwagon now, even after someone had told you that it was rolling toward the promised land.”

So is Facebook the next Google? I think it is still a little early to say yes, but they seem to have the same qualities that attracted people to Google all those years ago. I guess such is the cycle of life……and business.

IE7Pro to Add Bookmark Syncing

Back in June I talked a bit about how to improve Internet Explorer 7.0 with IE7Pro.   If you still use Internet Explorer, IE7Pro does a great job of bridging the gap between Firefox/Opera and IE7.

Features currently available with IE7Pro include:

Now CyberNet News reports that the IE7Pro team is back at it again, this time adding the ability to sync your bookmarks in their new beta version 1.1.  This process does require creating an account, but once done, you will have the ability to sync your bookmarks manually.  You can also update the settings to have it sync your bookmarks automatically.

I definitely think synchronizing your bookmarks has become the standard with web browsers, so this is an extremely useful feature.   My favorite part, though, is that you can access your bookmarks from any computer by going to My IE7Pro and logging in to your account!

Windows Live Writer Goes to Public Beta 3

While I’m not sure exactly how popular desktop-based blogging platforms truly are, there is no doubt that Windows Live Writer is the most popular one available.

According to the Windows Live Writer Beta page, you can now download the newest installment, known as Windows Live Writer 3. Here is what they list as being new with this version:

  • XHTML support
  • Support for 28 additional languages
  • Better handling of images
  • Ability to insert videos using “insert video” dialog
  • Upload images to Picasa Web when publishing to Blogger blogs
  • Numerous bug fixes

On an additional note, WLW is also available in their new Windows Live Pack, which serves the same general purpose as the Google Pack, except it instead pollutes your computer with a bunch of Microsoft software that you probably won’t ever use.
