Should You Advertise With Third Parties?

There has been some great discussion around the blogosphere this past week about third party advertising and its role in today’s world.

John Chow originally posted about a neat new BankRoll plugin for WordPress that allows users to accept reviews directly, bypassing the need for ReviewMe and other similar companies.  In his post, he covers the plugin, then explains why he won’t be using, preferring to split his income with ReviewMe in favor of getting more reviews.    After more clarification was requested by his readers, John explains why its all about the relationship.   In this post he explains that the networking involved with services like ReviewMe and Text Link Ads is well worth the up to 50% you have to give back.

Garry Conn has responded, offering his take on third party advertisement.  In his article he brings up some great counter-points, covering just how much money you could pocket with some hard work and patience.

My take?  I truly believe that it depends on the individual and their goals.   If you blog full time, and wish to maximize your income on your website(s), then launching your own advertising campaign is a great way to do that.   For other people who just enjoy blogging and don’t mind some supplement income, third party advertisers are the perfect fit.  Once you’ve installed Text Link Ads script on your website, you don’t ever really have to do anything again.   With ReviewMe, you bypass the seeking of advertisers, the negotiation of price, etc.  This is ideal for someone who doesn’t want to mess with all that extra work.

Like with anything, you can pay the middle man or cut him out.   Why hasn’t State Farm gone under now that we have Geico?  Because, some people prefer the middle man doing all the dirty work.   :)

    Kyle,

Thanks for the mention. I have to admit that when I wrote my article, I didn’t see that John Chow wrote his. So, this really isn’t a response to his article as I never knew about it. Nor, is this a pissing match between John Chow and I. I will be the first to admit, I would lose! LOL!!!
I like his site and just now started visiting it. The main point I want to stress is the fact that I want people to understand that they can do it on their own if they want. People don’t have to depend on third party advertisers to make money online. Yes, using these programs makes it easier, but when you use these programs, there is a loss of money. The actual advertiser will pay more, and you will make less, and the middle man laughs as he makes his way to the bank. :)

I tend to look at using Text Link Ads or similar as hiring an employee to do the work for me. Yes, I could earn more by doing it myself, but at the moment my time is better spent on creating good quality content for people to read. TLA has the exposure too, so companies looking to advertise can find relevant sites which makes it a little easier.

Having said all that, it’s quite likely that I’ll move away from these forms of advertising in the future and narrow it down to a few select advertisers doing specialist deals. At the moment my traffic levels don’t justify this approach, so I’ll stick with the easy way :)

    Garry,

Your article seemed to be a response to John’s article as it is a great representation of the opposite side of the argument, so I apologize if it wasn’t.

Arguments are good thing, not a pissing match. Its the point of blogging, because it stimulates conversations! Its always good to hear both sides and form our own opinions.

    Oh I know…

I just wanted to clarify that I didn’t write my article in a response to John Chows… But, I have to admit that the timing was pretty good! :)

A friendly debate is great because the end result helps people in the long run.
