Laptop or Desktop Computer?
March 25th, 2007
Something I’ve been pondering for awhile now is a question that effects many of us…..Laptop or Desktop?!?
About a year ago, when I started blogging, the first thing I did was use some money I had saved to purchase a Dell E1705 Inspiron laptop. Unfortunately, this was before the Core Duo came out, so I’m using the Centrino Duo, which has served me well. The laptop allows me to meet others at various Wi-Fi Hotspots to blog, or help them with whatever projects they are working on. Something happened though, that I didn’t expect. I’ve gotten to the point where I rarely use a desktop computer (outside of work). Even at home, I can go anywhere in the house to get my work done. This is really helpful with a 10 week old baby in the house!
Today I noticed on TechBuzz that laptops will overtake desktops by 2011. According to Thilak’s post, it seems that it will only take that long because of the recent release of Windows Vista. Otherwise, we could only be a year or two away from the laptop takeover.
I can certainly see the value in both, but for the most part, I don’t see myself going back to a desktop computer anytime in the near future. What do you use and why?

Remember when I was talking to you and Ryan a few months ago about my soon to be purchase? For weeks and weeks I was torn between getting an Apple or regular PC laptop…
As you might remember, I got a Dell Inspiron E1505. This laptop rocks. I didn’t want the 17in because for the extra price in the screen I was able to get all the upgrades on the E1505 for close to the same price…
This laptop is nice! I love it and I am so much more comfortable using it over a desktop. I am able to stretch out on my sofa and connect high speed on wireless… It’s great!
I still want an Apple… and eventually I hope to buy one…
I haven’t been a big Apple fan, to be honest, but I’ve had Ryan try to convince me otherwise. I guess back in the early 90’s we had an Apple at my home and I couldn’t get any computer games that worked on it, so I’ve been unhappy with Apple Computers since then. I will probably look into an Apple before making my next laptop purchase in a few years, as I know they are awesome now!
You can’t go wrong with an Inspiron. I just bought a wireless mouse to go with it and I’m all set. I’ve been buying my computers and parts on eBay, so I think at the time the laptop I bought was roughly 2500.00, but I paid $900.00 brand new still in the box. These people make tremendous profits buying in bulk from Dell, then reselling and make a few hundred profit per laptop. They make money, I save money, and the company sells a lot more computers, so everyone wins in my opinion.
I personally prefer Desktops as i am more into gaming but eventually i will require a laptop in the future when i start to work .
Madhur,
What kind of gaming are you in to? I’m a EverQuest vet (5 years), and put a year into EverQuest 2, and also played World of Warcraft for about a month or so.
I can definitely see the value of a desktop computer if you are an online gamer. The selection of video cards are much better and it could be hectic setting up Teamspeak and stuff to a laptop!
Definitely a laptop.
Not because it’s the future but because this is the time when everything goes mobile – including ourselves. We travel a lot more than generations before us.
So, the clear choice is definitely a laptop.
Inspirational Quote Maniac,
Great points! We, as a society, are definitely becoming more mobile.
Do you worry more about your laptop’s security then you would with a desktop? I have certain information (such as financial information and iTunes, etc.) that I keep only on my desktop computer and external harddrive for this reason.
You are right Kyle . For a gamer , a desktop is a better option unless you can afford Alienware .
Btw i am more into Counter Strike and Soccer games .
