Kyle’s Cove Theme Gets Some Big Changes
January 1st, 2008
In the past, I’ve always made an effort not to settle, but rather to push myself to improve my situation. Whether it is something in real life or something online, I am always trying to improve things.
With that said, I was very happy with the theme I made for Kyle’s Cove, but felt that it could be better. After putting in more hours than I want to think about in getting things together, I am proud to announce a redesign for Kyle’s Cove. I’ve tried to make the look as close to the old site as possible, so the main differences will be in the features. Here is a quick rundown of what to expect:
Additions/Changes:
- Kyle’s Cove now supports Gravatars! With the recent acquisition of Gravatars by Automattic, I feel that Gravatars are once again the way to go for bloggers and are a good way to support WordPress. It is now fully integrated with WordPress.com blogs and I look for this to spill over into WordPress self-hosted blogs in the future, now that Automattic is supporting it. If you don’t already have one, you can get a Gravatar account here. You’ll want to use whatever e-mail address in the e-mail field that you use with your Gravatar account so that it will pull the Gravatar properly (it is case sensitive, so use all lower-case).
- Categories and Tags – These are now wrapped into the post meta data section, so you can click to view them for the post, but they are out of the way if you don’t care about them.
- Site Navigation – In the menu on the right, you can now view most navigation information by clicking the tabs next to the popular posts section. This way they are available for people looking for them, but also out of the way for everyone else. The other tabs are Top Commentators, Categories, and Archives. This also removes the need for having this stuff clogging up the footer of the blog.
- Alternate shading – Post comments now alternate between white and a little shaded blue to add a little separation.
Subtractions
- Web 2.0 Icons – I’ve removed most of the social bookmarking icons as my research showed that people don’t use them. Most people have a bookmarklet or browser button to use these services. In its place I will be leaving the ShareThis plugin and a option to click over and leave a comment. We’ll see if this works better.
- Google AdSense blocks will now only appear after two days on single post pages so regular readers/commentators won’t have to see them.
It will be interesting to see how this theme change influences advertising and Google AdSense clicks, etc. The 125×125 banners now stand out a little better and I think ads will now (hopefully) perform better. I’ve also got some other ideas for it, but I didn’t get them done in time for today’s targeted launch, so those may be coming in the future.
I’m off to get ready for the new year, but I hope everyone has a happy and safe new year, and thanks for reading Kyle’s Cove!
P.S. Questions, comments and rude remarks are encouraged, so let me know what you think of the change(s)! What do you like better? What don’t you like?

Hey man… this is really nice! I love the sidebar. Everything is way cool! The section that shows Popular, Top Commentator, Categories and Archives is awesome…
Recent comments is totally rocking by showing avatars. How do these show up exactly? I didn’t quite understand in the post and I see that yours is the only one showing?
Very cool work man… I am totally impressed!
Maybe it takes some time for the gravatar to show up… I had to sign up again, I had my original account for over a year, but all worked out well. I was able to upload my image, but it doesn’t seem to be appearing just yet.
I’m with Garry – that section is really slick. That had to take some fancy coding footwork – did you custom code it or did you outsource?
Garry,
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I think it may take a bit to start showing up, but it seems to be working well now that Automattic has it. Make sure that the e-mail address you use in the e-mail address field matches the e-mail address on your Gravatar account.
**Update: Garry, it looks like your Gravatar is now showing up!**
Llama,
Neither actually. I took an existing theme and molded it to fit my needs, though other than the recent comments section you probably wouldn’t recognize much from the original theme. I wanted it to look closer to the theme I was already using, so I did a complete overhaul.
Smart, very smart. Lazy too – which is my style. No sense writing it from scratch or paying someone to do it when you can just fiddle with the CSS hmm?
Llama,
Not sure laziness is the right word, but I’m not a master with code so it worked well for me! It was a LOT more than CSS though because I did a complete overhaul.
Hey Kyle,
I love the new design. I really like it.
Nice makeover for the new year. Congrats
and Happy New Year.
Looks great buddy! The recent comments section is nicely done too. I love it.
It looks cool buddy. The sidebar is awesome. Nice work.
Very impressive, Kyle. You’ve kicked the door down on 2008! Woo-hoo! LOL
Hi Kyle,
I stumbled on your site just today and its good to see a new design at the right moment. I have not seen your theme earlier but the current one is very neat and impressive. It looks well organized and separated according to the content. Congrats on your effort and wish you and very happy new year ahead!
Btw, even I have redesigned my theme for the new year. I would be glad if you could just have a look.
Thanks everyone for the comments! Feel free to add in some suggestions if you have any.
Nitinpai – Thanks for stopping by! You can now see the old theme on Ultimate Online Resource (no sense in it going to waste).
I should say that these changes constitute a major overhaul to the design, good to see that tabs are compacting the content too making it more acessible
Wow Kyle, what a way to start off the new year. The tabbed content in the sidebar is pretty slick.
Kyle, happy new year! Excellent work with the theme! I love what you have with the layout trimming and sprucing things a bit. I have been working on modifying my theme too and was hoping for a New Year release but things at my day job took over most of the holidays. I have postponed to sometime later this month.
The tabbed sidebar is the way to go especially on a 2-column theme! It’s very slick.
Oh, I meant to ask you if there was any specific reason you moved you stuff from the bottom panel all to the sidebar?
K – No specific reason. In my opinion, the Top Commentators, Categories, and Archives are all situational and most readers won’t have any interest in them. I felt this way they are available for someone that is specifically looking for them, but out of the way for everyone else.
Did you like the old footer I had before?
Lovely redesign, Kyle. I really like it. Your use of tabbed content in a two column theme is making me think twice about my 3 column December site redesign!
I’ve also been playing with tabbed content in my test region and I’ll be looking to leverage this going forward but still testing for now.
As far as the number of hours put in – not to worry. You’re not alone. I holed up for quite some time as well. If you’re not going to do it right, why bother?
The only thing I would suggest is a change to the text color in your navigation menu. Maybe its my older not quite 20/20 eyes, but the blue blends a bit too well with the dark navigation bar.
Best of luck with it!
Robert – Thanks for the kind words and the suggestion! The header has been something I have been unhappy with (even with the old design), but have had trouble getting it to look the way I want to. Every shade of blue I’ve tried seems to blend a little bit. I’m also tried greys and it didn’t look right. I may just try a white or grey instead of the blue, or remove the black background.
I think I will have to head back to the batcave and continue working on it. I’m sure if I focus on it specifically I can get something a little better!
Thanks to everyone for the kind words and the suggestions for improvements!
