Increasing Your Alexa Rank
April 4th, 2007
Google SEO expert Garry Conn has been on a mission lately to increase his Alexa ranking. I’ve debated the value of Alexa here before, but regardless of its true value, its a strong factor in how much advertising revenue you can make on your website.
Dosh Dosh recently offered 20 quick ways to increase your Alexa rank:
Here is a collection of methods you can use to boost your Alexa Rank. Most of the tips were gleaned from several fellow bloggers and webmasters who’ve experimented with Alexa. Other tips come from specific articles and forums. Those that I have referenced are listed at the end of this post.
Do these tips work? Yes, they do. But most of them require active effort in generating traffic. They will work as long as long as you are consistently performing specific actions. To increase your Alexa rank in the long term, I would suggest coming up with quality content which draws and maintains a large audience. This is an excellent way to passively increase your Alexa rank.
As pointed out in the post, there is no easy way to increase your ranking, but it is certainly possible with a little extra effort to get your ranking up. I’m hoping to put some of these tips to work in the near future.

I do question the value of Alexa too. I personally could live without it. I learned a lot about Alexa this week. Unfortunately, programs such as ReviewMe.com and Text-Link-Ads.com use the Alexa traffic ranking system to determine whether or not they will approve your site for participation into their money making programs.
I don’t know why so Alexa holds so much weight into this factorization. I would like to believe that there would be better methods in determining which sites should be approved or not.
Although on that note… getting a great Alexa rank, in my opinion, is much easier than gaining a good Google PageRank… so maybe I shouldn’t complain too much about it.
I do know this: Programs such as Text-Link-Ads and ReviewMe.com are fun and they work. I have made more money in 3 weeks using these two programs compared to the amount of money I made all year using Google AdSense.
Having that said, yes! I am very interested in improving not only my Alexa Ranking, but also my Technorati rank and also increasing my feedburner subscriptions.
I agree with what I think is everyone’s opinion. Why does alexa mean so much. I want to increase my Alexa rank as well, but my reason is for another service that helps monetize your blog…PayPerPost.
At least with PageRank a ton of sites can have a good one. With Alexa, to be in the top 100,000 you are competing with high profile commercial sites and other people who know what they are doing, and are actively trying to keep their alexa rank up.
If I haven’t made it clear yet, let me put it a simple way… I do not like alexa.
I dont personally like the Alexa ranking system but since many sites like TLA use it , we dont have much choice .
Good points! Improving my Alexa ranking is something I need to work on going forward, and the tips in the article I linked to above are great ways to do this.
Like I said above, it looks like it will take some effort, but isn’t difficult if you apply yourself towards it.
The easiest way to get your Alexa rank up is just to install their toolbar and look at your own site. One friend managed to totally distort (unintentionally) his geographic breakdown when he was working on his site a lot over a period of a few months.
Of course, he also moved hundreds of thousands up the ranks and, whilst not a commercial site, ended up in the top 100k.
I’d like to think that the likes of ReviewMe take account of such potential distortions in the figures but I suspect not. Of course, I’d say that google does something in a similar vein – I’m sure that you’ve noticed that you get more searches coming to your site from google if you’ve been looking at your own pages.
Wouldn’t it be funny if to move up google, we only really had to open the page and sit there refreshing it all day without all the bother of actually writing anything?
Personally i dont care for ranking on alexa or other sites, but i want to be easily found by visitors when they search content only specific to my site.
Arnold,
Great points! Typically sites like Text Link Ads and ReviewMe only report the rankings. I do not believe potential advertisers take into account distortions with Alexa and Technorati rankings when deciding who to advertise with, but these distortions are a reason that they probably should.
Green,
As a publisher, Alexa and other sites won’t really have any value, but this is what most advertisers use when determining who to advertise with. This is why it is important to work on if you’re trying to make money online.
Question: We own a dating site in the states and we have a 10K alexa rank in the states, how do we get over the objection of no pagerank?
Thanks,
Ahmad
