Google Reader Notifier for Windows
August 23rd, 2007
If you are a user of the extremely popular web-based feed reader known as Google Reader, there is a nice application you will want to know about.  The only catch is that it requires use of Microsoft’s Windows Operating System in order to function.
This application is known as Google Reader Notifier, and it does exactly that.  Once downloaded, the notifier will sit in your operating system’s system tray and monitor your Google Reader feeds for you.   Whenever any unread posts are found, your system tray will display a pop-up message to alert you that there are unread posts for viewing.  You can then click on the pop-up to bring you to your Google Reader account within your default web browser.
Another useful feature is the ability to customize how often it checks for updates, ranging from 5-120 minutes. You also get the ability to receive reports from individual labels.
Overall, this application is useful, but not a necessity for Google Reader users.  If you enjoy pop-up alerts, then you will enjoy this application.

I use Google Reader Notifier, which is a plugin for firefox, that does exactly the same job, but meh, different horses for different courses!
Rhys – I was using that as well, but I don’t have my browser open all the time
Both do the same thing, but one is limited to when it works, and the other works any time the computer is powered on!
I’m also a big system tray junkie, so this new program is appealing to me. I hope eventually all programs will minimize/close to the system tray, or at least have that option!
This thing is good , will make my job easier .
I would love to use Google Reader for my blogging because I think the interface is great, but the update interval is far too slow for me to notice the “breaking” news. They have an update algorithm that checks frequently updated sites more often than those who have less new content. I’ve seen several hours go by before an update was posted to one of the sites.
We ended up buying FeedDemon, which is a great app for reading a bunch of feeds.
