I also ran across a nice article called Google AdSense: Facts, FAQs, and Tools, which does a great job of covering how Google AdSense works. In the article the cover several topics, including Things You Probably Didn’t Know About Google AdSense, Google’s Information and Tools, Google AdSense Tools and Services, and Google AdSense Tips and Resources.
I don’t think you can rely on Google Adsense as your blogs primary income, but it is great for a little bit of supplement income if you have proper ad placement. I have had a great deal of success using Text Link Ads as well. What ad services do you use?

You are right about AdSense… and also right about looking into alternatives… Ideally though, I truly believe that one of the best things you can do is create an independent campaign if you have the traffic, and repeat visits to support it. I believe that launching and promoting your own campaign can be far more effective than using a third party company. Problogger had a post yesterday about this in fact…
If you were to replace all your Google AdSense links and Text-Link-Ads campaigns on your site, and promote sections/posts of your own site and also mix in ads that promote your advertisement page… initially, you will lose some money… but I don’t think it would be long before you would land some accounts.
Think about it… you have ad the Advertise Here link on the top of your header for a month now… maybe longer, and what has it done?
I truly believe if you started really working deals… and selling your campaign that it could be far more effective than depending on someone else to do it for you (people who take a huge cut out of your profits).
Your site is totally ready for this… If I am correct, your home page is PR5, and you are getting over 200,000 page views per month. If you want money, there are advertisers who will give it to you.
Think about it, give it a shot… if it doesn’t work, then go back to AdSense. But you are right, AdSense today… will never pay your bills unless you have TONS, TONS, of traffic or if you have over 100 sites with the goal in mind of making maybe $3/day from each of them…
It all depends on what you want… and based off what you want, then it depends on how you make it happen.
