GMail to Get a New Look Soon?
September 24th, 2007
It’s been almost 3.5 years now since Google’s beta version of GMail was launched. In the time since the launch, it has received several improvements, but the overall appearance of GMail has remained the same for the most part.Â
Today ZDNet has posted that while doing some basic translations into other languages, Google might have accidentally let it slip that a new version is in the works.Â
Although I rarely actually visit my Google account (and instead access my mail through various other methods, include POP3), I’ve never really had a problem with the look of GMail.  I have, however, heard several complaints from others who seem to prefer the look of Yahoo Mail.Â
Whatever the reason for the new version, I’m sure a lot of GMail users will welcome the changes made in GMail 2.0.Â

It will be good to see a new design for a change .
I don’t think it needs a new design. Everyone is already comfortable, and probably wouldn’t adjust well to change. I just think it needs added features such as expandable messages (similar to how you can expand Google Reader items).
I’d be content if they added folders heh.
I agree with Brown Baron! Folders would be nice. And well a new design as well but I’m quite content with the existing one.
Madhur – I think you are correct, although I’m fully reserving judgement until I see what the new design looks like.
Ryan – I think features should be more of a priority, but I don’t think users will mind a change to the appearance of GMail if it improves navigation and is a little easier on the eyes. Just look at all the popularity of all those Firefox extensions and Greasemonkey scripts that alter the appearance.
Brown – I’m not a big fan of folders, but I’m okay with that if we can still keep the label functionality.
Personally, I never cared how gmail looks. Even though I do use it to keep in touch with friends during work hours, … Well, that’s basically all I use it for!
I use gmail almost everyday and I have no problem with how it looks. Google in general goes with simplicity (with powerful scripts) and that is exactly what gmail is.
Much awaited change for Gmail. Lets see what all changes comes over.
There’s actually a Greasemonkey script for adding folder capabilities to Gmail. I use that and it works wonderfully. Personally I would like to see them offer features that aren’t available as scripts.
Thanks for the heads up Ryan! Now I’m happy haha
Ryan – Do you have a link to the script? I’d like to add it to my Greasemonkey scripts collection.

It’s one of the only scripts I have installed, and it works flawlessly.
I’m curious about one thing – if a new design will come [although I doubt it] will it look similar to Yahoo’s design?
and about what Ryan Wagner said – that script is a nice one, but I prefer using the Better GMail greasemonkey script offered by LifeHacker :p
it gives a new fancy look to GMail :p
ps: sorry for my double comment
I use GMail for both my work and personal email addresses. I’ve set it up to use my own domain names and it works a treat. A redesign maybe a good thing though as I think they’ve had to ‘bolt-on’ a lot of functionality and somethings just aren’t where you’d expect them. It will be nice to see what Google come up with.
Ryan – Thanks! I have updated the script to my list
Chris TK – I think if they added folders, it would probably have to look similar to Yahoo’s. I actually like the AJAX-style look of Yahoo mail, but prefer my GMail functionality.
Neil – Good point! Sometimes things are added to the software that weren’t considered when the design was made. As a result, a new design could better incorporate these changes.
Kyle – Yahoo looks good because we are all used with that type of email client :p
I’ll honest prefer something different. because when GMail was launched, they were the first webmail that had a different structure… or am I mistaking? :-/
Chris – I think you are right, in that Google has the first to make a significant change to the appearance. I do think that there nesting of comments was a big reason they went with a different look, though, because it would be hard to work nested comments into a standard looking web-based e-mail.
anyway – IF Google will launch a new version of GMail [look & feel] I hope it will be a BOOM
I’m a small Google fan myself
