Flock, Where Did You Go?!?

Let me start by saying I’m a big fan of the Flock web browser.   I even made an Ultimate Guide to Using the Flock Web Browser, which covers just about everything someone would need to know to make the transition to Flock.

On October 24, 2006, Firefox 2.0 was released and I made the temporary switch to Firefox while I waited for Flock to release version 1.0 (based on the Firefox 2.0 code).    Fast forward just over 6 months and its still not here.  The most recent stable build I could find can be found here, but there is no estimated release date.

What does this mean for Flock?  If it will take a few more months to get here, it will be pushing up against Firefox 3.0, which looks to be out around September of 2007.   Then will Flock users have to wait another 6 months (or longer) to get Firefox 3.0 functionality in Flock?

I’m one of Flock’s biggest fans.   I love the community and want to see the browser succeed, but I can’t help but get frustrated with the wait for Flock 1.0.  Any other Flock users hating the wait?

  1. Hey Kyle,

Yeah! I hear what your saying, I am a big supporter of Flock, I know the updates are coming out slow, but I saw a preview of the lastest and I’m on the Flock-Dev mailer and it’s getting really close. I hope to see the next update in another month.

  2. I’ve been following Flock 1.0 closely and understand that it will be out eventually.

I guess my concern is that when Firefox 3.0 comes out, Flock’s next version will take a year turn around again. I’m just not sure the browser can be successful if it is always an entire release behind.

I want it to succeed, I just think a wait longer than 2 months after the Firefox release is to long to keep interest. Especially when they have access to Firefox’s updates prior to the release (code is available via betas/release candidates) so they can start early.

  3. Kyle: Can you provide us a link for functionalities of Flock?

  4. Green,

See my Users Guide for the Flock Web Browser. It should provide everything you need ;)
I will be updating it once Flock 1.0 comes out, but most changes are based on the Firefox 2.0 browser, so it will basically be adding the features that Firefox 2.0 added.

  5. Hey Kyle,

We’re well aware of the closing gap between our 1.0 and Firefox 3.0 (though I’m not aware that they have a solid release date). One of our large focuses is on developing a system for quicker release to negate the kind of delay we had between Firefox 1.5 and 2.0 integration. Rest assured, we’re working hard to get you a 1.0 release and a browser that continues to be built on the latest, most powerful technology.

    Flock on!

  6. Evan,

What happened to Will Pate? As always, thanks for responding to my inquiry. Its always a thrill to be able to communicate directly with a company that has a product you are passionate about.

I figured some of the company turnover had something to do with the delay and truly hope that future releases are more timely.

I will likely be switching my primary web browser back to Flock once version 1.0 is out, so I’m excited for it to be available.

  7. Hey Kyle,

Will is still with Flock part-time, but he’s spending the majority of his time working with a company that is trying to prevent disease outbreak in Africa. Really cool stuff. Scope out his blog (willpate.org) for more info.

Glad to hear you’re still excited about 1.0. :) It’s been a long, exhausting trip for all of us, but there’s a renewed sense of excitement about releasing a 1.0 that we’re proud to show to everyone. It’s gonna be an exciting ride!

  8. Thanks Evan for following up on your comment. Flock has always been great about interacting with their users and creating a good community feeling.

I will have to check out Will’s site.
