Build Netscape 9 Into Firefox 2.0
October 17th, 2007
So, I’m sure everyone noticed that Netscape released an update to their Netscape 9 web browser earlier this week? Oh, you didn’t notice? You aren’t alone! Saying it was barely mentioned by anyone is being generous, as I only saw the update mentioned in one place.
If you’ve tried Netscape 9, you’ll know that it truly is a pretty good browser, it just doesn’t offer anything to users that can’t be found elsewhere. They’ve basically given Firefox 2.0 a new look and built a bunch of popular extensions directly into the web browser, then released it to the public.
If you want to try Netscape 9 without actually downloading it, Ryan at CyberNet News has created a useful post explaining how to get Netscapes best features in Firefox. It looks like you can even get a Netscape Firefox theme!
I personally use Firefox/Flock for the most part, but if you are truly looking for another web browser, I usually recommend Opera to friends. Netscape just didn’t do it for me.

Netscape doesn’t do it for me either, and I was going to write up another review for today’s article but then I thought to myself “why?” It’s essentially Firefox wrapped up with a bunch of extensions, and when Firefox 3 is released it will probably take Netscape nearly a year to update their software. So what’s the point of using something that is so far behind?
Ryan – I agree, although the Netscape team has been much more efficient than the Flock team. I love the Flock browser, but releasing the 0.9 version a year after Firefox 2.0 was way to long and it is a never ending process. With every single Firefox update, you are delayed in getting your update.
I see the same thing with Netscape. They will both have their private fan base, but most mainstream users want a browser like Firefox or Opera.
Netscape and Flock both offer extras, on top of the extras that Firefox already has with extensions. If only a small portion of Firefox users use these extensions, then that leaves a small number of potential users for Netscape and Flock to appeal to. I like both (especially Flock), but don’t see either being around long term.
I completely agree with Ryan. No point at all.
I love Flock and think it has huge potential, but they are building on top of what I consider to be an unstable version of Firefox. Firefox 2 already has its own memory leaks, and Flock is making it way worse by throwing all of their own stuff on top of it. For that reason I think they are doomed to failure. I’ve yet to see someone actually using that as their browser of choice.
I have been using Netscape forever. I was using v9 when I started to try Firefox. Firefox seems to only allow me to import bookmarks and other things from very old versions; that is, 4, 6,and 7. Is there a way to import from v9 into Firefox?
Thanks for any help.
