Blogging Tip: Improve Your Site By Improving Your Theme
October 23rd, 2007
If you have been blogging for awhile, you probably have heard the popular blogging saying that “Content is king.” This is definitely true, but there are a lot of other things you can do beyond writing great content to help contribute to your blog’s success.
One example happened a couple of months ago when the evil John Chow felt his earnings had hit a wall. He was making good money, but he felt that he could do better, so he decided that he needed to make a change to continue to improve his blog’s earnings. That was when he decided to get a custom theme that allowed for better ad placement. In addition to allowing for better advertising placement and the inclusion of 125 x 125 ads, this also served as a way for John to create a unique brand or look for him to be associated with.
John was not the only blogger to make significant changes to his theme lately. Domtan has recently compiled a list of full time bloggers that have made major theme changes and includes both before and after screen shots. I’ve been reading many of these blogs for a long period of time, so it was kind of fun to revisit some of their old themes. While reading through that post, it was very clear that giving your blog a unique look can go a long way towards improving traffic, as well as improving your site’s income.
Unfortunately, at this time I am not a full time blogger and in my current situation I don’t really have the time to do a new theme from scratch, so this blog’s theme tends to be a constant work in progress. My goal is to keep it unique, yet still work to improve it to keep up with modern blogging trends. I get a few requests each week asking where they can download my theme, so I feel like I’m doing a good job of keeping up with the trends.
Are you using a commonly used WordPress theme? If you find that you are using a WordPress theme that you downloaded from somewhere on the net, you may want to take that next step and invest the time into creating a custom WordPress theme (or consider purchasing one). This will help you to both create an identity and continue to evolve your blog. Investing the time or money may not seem worth it at first, but in the long run it will help you increase your readership and improve your monthly earnings.

I agree with you Kyle . Its the design that leaves the first impression. Even my earnings have improved by more than 50% by switching to my new theme.
Yes, Kyle custom themes are much better than having themes that are used by 100’s of people. It tends to confuse readers as to which site is which.
Also like you said having a custom theme can allow users to create custom ad placements which is not possible when using a free theme.
I am designing a theme for one of my favorite blogger and it should be live soon
Madhur – That is great to hear! You’ve been putting out some quality work too, which helps
Keith – Can’t wait to see it! I considered releasing this theme on a few occasions, but each time I do, I see the BloggingPro theme showing up everywhere and it makes me cringe a little. I decided that I will only release this theme if I decide to make a new one!
Customizing your theme is addicting. It’s hard to say, “ok I’ll stop now” haha. Having a unique look/feel really is important. I should stop customizing and just make my own heh.
I totally agree that content is the king. Visitors like to visit sites which add fresh and original content on a regular basis.
Custom theme is definitely a good option, but not affordable by all bloggers.
Brown – I know what you’re saying! I am finally getting to the point where I am relatively happy with this theme, so I decided to start a new site to give me something to work on
Nirmal – Themes like the Revolution theme are only $49.00 and are incredible to say the least. If someone is serious about blogging, I would hope they could drop $40.00-$70.00 as a one time thing to try to improve their websites.
I see a lot of people that are content with things, and that is fine, but sometimes you have to make an investment to see the improvements. Sometimes that results in failure, but it is what separates those that are successful from others. John Chow had to buy advertising, and later spent close to a grand on that theme he is using now in order to keep pushing up revenues. I think once people get to a point where things have leveled off, something fresh can help keep your site growing and in turn gaining revenue.
