Blogging Discussion: Using Tags vs. Categories
September 28th, 2007
At the beginning of this year when I made the decision to move WordPress, I was presented with a new dilemma that I had never had before.  That dilemma is whether to use categories as I had been doing with Typepad, or to use the tagging options I now had available to via WordPress plugins. With the recent release of WordPress 2.3 and the new ability to use tags “out of the box,” I think this is a good time to open up a discussion on whether to use categories or tags.
First, I’ll start out by pointing to a recent guest post on Pro Blogger titled Using Categories or Tags Effectively on Your Blog.  This post gives you a lot of information about both categories and tags, as well as helping to create a great way to visualize each type. I thought it was well written, and the author encourages bloggers to use both on their blogs, but for different purposes.
As some readers may have noticed, I choose not to display my blog’s categories, as this blog covers a wide variety of topics, leaving me with roughly 30 categories that I use regularly. Instead, I set up each category to automatically count as a tag and then I choose to display my blog’s tags with each individual post (which combines my tags with the category I use).  This allows me more flexibility to use all sorts of tags and my designated tags are then converted to meta tags for search engines.  I feel these tags not only improve site navigation for readers, but also help give search engines a better idea of what my post is about and how to properly index it.Â
Using something like Ryan’s Recommended Tags plugin is great because it helps me to control the number of tags I’m using and keep them more useful to the readers that use them.   I’ve also considered possibly using a tag cloud in the sidebar, but haven’t gotten around to experimenting with that yet.Â
So, that is why I do what I do on this blog. Do you use categories, tags, or both? I’d love to hear your answer and your reasons in the comments below!!

I actually use both, I have some mainstream categories setup for the big topics, but then tags are used for the nitty gritty.
Ryan – I have a plugin that allows me to reassign categories in bulk, which is useful for deleting old categories. I have given some thought to reassigning then deleting some of the categories that I don’t use as often and then displaying my categories list (10 or less I would say).
Sounds like you have the right idea and have the best of both worlds!
I also use them both because tags are describing more general aspects of the post content.
for example if I post a message with some javascript technique or trick, I’ll put the post in the categories javascript, web-developing, but I will add to it tags like: javascript tips, javascript techniques, javascript, web developing
I Also use both. To be honest I used to only use categories, prior to discovering plugins for tags. However, because of the great results I had with the search engines, I have been a little hesitant to just use tags. After reading this article it does make sense, but I have to stay with what has worked, so I will continue to use both.
Chris – Wow, that is some specific tagging! I like it.
Joe – I’m starting to think you (along with many others above) are right. I did do a quick consolidation of my categories, cutting out about 20 of them to get to around the 10 category mark. I’m gonna try to stick to using a single category with each post and use tags for everything else.
Maybe you should consider manually creating a list of your categories somewhere? That’s what we do in our footer, and that way we have more control over what appears. We have about two dozen categories, but only display our most important ones on the page.
