Hi Kyle,
Thanks for mentioning RankQuest SEO Toolbar in the list. Please do use other offerings from RankQuest (WatchRank, SEO Gadget, etc.,) and share your feedback with us.

D Sarathy,
This list is strictly for Firefox extensions, but I’d be happy to check WatchRank and SEO gadget. I’m always looking for useful things like that!
Thanks for reading and the suggestion!
Comment by czm on February 12th, 2007:
Tab X description says “Adds tabs to your browser”
Should say “Adds a close button to your tabs”.
Comment by Kyle Eslick on February 12th, 2007:
CZM,
Thanks for the correction. I have updated it!
Comment by diggs on February 13th, 2007:
Hi,
Are u aware of any plugin that lets me see a snapshot of new email from gmail account.i am aware of many gmail notifiers but i am intersted in not opnly the header but a preview of the mail. just like avbl for yahoo mail in maxthon.
thnax 4 ur help!!!
Comment by Kyle Eslick on February 14th, 2007:
Diggs,
I am not aware of one, however I believe the GMail notifier (made for your computer desktop, not a Firefox extenion) provides a preview with each new E-mail notification. You can check it out here.
Comment by John Dodman on February 16th, 2007:
Hi
Most interesting list, I would love to see something to allows me to close Firefox, I often use CCleaner and sometimes I get the message “You need to close Firefox first” even though I have close it, there must be something not closed I don’t know about, the only thing I can do it is to Re-boot, there must be a way to completly close Firefox without Re-booting.
If anyone can find an application to do that you can, looking forward to hearing from you.
John.
Comment by Kyle Eslick on February 16th, 2007:
John,
Great question! I’m not sure there is an extension for that, but there is a semi-easy fix. Simply press Alt+Cntl+Delete and select the Task Manager button. From there, click the Processes tab and find any openings of Firefox.exe. You can then click on them and click End Process to close them.
I’ve had this problem before with Firefox 2.0 when I was beta testing, but haven’t had it since it went live. I wrote earlier about how the Google Browser Sync extension was causing some Firefox problems, so I would suggest uninstalling that if you have it installed to see if the problem continues. If not, you can do the above to close any open Firefox applications!

Comment by M. Ömer Gölgeli on February 17th, 2007:
You should add “Extended Status Bar” to the list along with “Trashmail.net” addons

Thanks for the suggestions. I checked them out and think they look like great extensions, so I have added them to the above list.
Keep ‘em coming!

Comment by Freesitebuilder on February 19th, 2007:
Add Bookmark Here - add bookmark directly to a folder/subfolder.
Boox - enhance the bookmarks sidebar with description, info on recent visits, location.
FireFox Extension Backup Extension - back up your extensions.
Plain text to link - highlight and right-click to turn URL’s that are in plain text into clickable links.
tiny Menu - I’ve far too many buttons and toolbars, so I use this to reduce the standard menu line to one button.
Uppity - go up one level on a web site. Handy if the link is broken, just keep going up until you reach a valid page.
Comment by Silvan on February 20th, 2007:
Some more suggestions:
LINKIFICATION - like ‘Plain text to link’ mentioned above, but automatic (no highlighting involved).
DOWNLOADHELPER - allows quick and easy downloading of embedded media, e.g. YouTube videos.
MCAFEE SITEADVISOR - highly recommended security add-on, gives each site a security rating based on various criteria. Also allows user reviewing.
RESURRECT PAGES - allows the viewing of broken pages using numerous internet caches.
Comment by Kyle Eslick on February 20th, 2007:
Mike, FreeSiteBuilder, and Silvan -
Thanks for the suggestions, they are always appreciated and help make the list better. I will be updating the list tonight and using many of your suggestions above.
If you have a suggestion, feel free to comment below and I’ll get them added to the list. A name, brief description, and link to the extension are appreciated, but only the name is required.
Comment by naga on February 22nd, 2007:
hi,
i got 2 knw quite a gud number of useful extensions here. I would like to add info about another extension which i like using. Itz rather a decoration for your browser when u open multiple tabs.
‘Colorful tabs’ is an extension that would add a color to each new tab you open in the window. it makes it easy to distinguish each tab when many tabs are opened.
Comment by SimonC on February 22nd, 2007:
I’m a newbie Firefox user and this has been a really useful list to setup my browser.
Question: I have separate user accounts on my XP-Pro machine for 3 kids. The add-ons only install on my account. Is there a way to install onto all accounts on the PC?
Comment by Kyle Eslick on February 22nd, 2007:
Naga - Thanks for the Colorful Tabs suggestion. I have gone ahead and added Colorful Tabs to the list.
SimonC - Off the top of my head, I can’t think of any extensions that do that. I did a quick search and it looks like the Firefox Extension Backup Extension just might work for that. It allows you to back them up. Drop them in a public folder, then log in on your other accounts and install them possibly?
I haven’t tested it myself, but it looks like that is the only one I could find that “might” do what your looking for.
Comment by David Jones on February 23rd, 2007:
Thanks for your list.
Do you remember the name of that FireFox add-on that automatically scrolls you back to where you left off viewing a page, so one doesn’t have to keep scrolling back down over and over again?
I’d like to use that one again!
Thanks for any help,
David
Comment by Freesitebuilder on February 23rd, 2007:
SimonC,
Here’s the info on installing for all users:
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Installing_extensions
I haven’t tried it myself, as my children complain loudly if I change their setup!
Comment by dv on February 26th, 2007:
Has anyone heard of a tool that will open all Google/Yahoo main result links into new tabs?
Comment by Internet Advertising in Pakistan on March 4th, 2007:
WOW! A great list and I really liked the multiple Gmail accounts manager simutaneously…
Thanks & keep it up!
Comment by Freesitebuilder on March 4th, 2007:
dv, I use Tab Mix Plus to add to tab opening options - middle-click (if you have a scroll or 3-button mouse) will open in a new tab. Or you can add the “new tab” button to your toolbar, and then dragging and dropping a link on that button will open in a new page.
Comment by Kyle Eslick on March 4th, 2007:
David - I’ve not actually seen that extension you described, but I would probably use it if I run across it. If anyone knows, I’d love to add it to the list.
DV - Another one I haven’t heard of, but scroll up a bit. It looks like Freesitebuilder may have your answer!
Internet - No problem. I’m glad you found the list useful
Freesitebuilder - Thanks for chiming in and answering some questions!
Comment by Aniela on April 5th, 2007:
Another great list coming from you. Some of the simple plugins that I couldn’t do without are Colorful Tabs and the Stumbleupon toolbar.
Comment by Reggie on April 29th, 2007:
Thank you firefox workers you all are doing a grandjob.
Untill now i firefox is still faster than Internet Explorer. Better in opening pages and downloading as well.
Your adds-on are great.
So thanks again.

The Firefox Extension Backup Extension (FEBE)looks useful. The last thing I need is to download all these extenstions again!
Comment by Toronta on May 31st, 2007:
One of my all-time favourite extensions which I’ve never seen in any ‘best extensions’ list is called MileWideBack. Instead of clicking on the Back button to go back a page, simply move the mouse pointer to anywhere on the left edge of the screen and press the left mouse button. To go forward a page, move the mouse pointer to the left edge of the screen and press the right mouse button. Since installing it last year, I hardly ever use the Back/Forward buttons anymore. Highly recommended, especially for those (like me) who can’t get used to ‘mouse gesture’ extensions but regularly use the Back/Forward button. A very simple little extension, but extremely handy!

**** NEW FIREFOX ADD-ON: PICLENS ****
Hello Kyle:
I thought you might be interested in PicLens, our brand new Firefox add-on, currently available at piclens.com/firefox/ (and soon on Mozilla).
PicLens for Firefox instantly transforms your browser into an immersive, interactive slideshow experience for viewing photos on the web. With just one click, PicLens makes mundane thumbnail images come to life via a full-screen presentation that actually goes beyond the confines of traditional browser window.
For example, suppose you searched, say, “flowers” in Google Image Search. Rather than browsing the tiny thumbnail images, PicLens automatically converts your browser screen into a full-screen (actually “full-monitor”) slide viewer in about 1 second. PicLens works on a number of other sites, also. PicLens also has a Safari version for Mac users.
If interested, please kindly see the link below to see screen shots, our press release, and our free download at:
http://www.piclens.com/pr
We’d be thrilled if you’d try out PicLens, and let us know what you think.
Kind regards,
Alec

Comment by MASA on July 14th, 2007:
I think I might have a longer one. 96 extensions installed for me.
Comment by John on July 31st, 2007:
Kyle, great list! Lately I fell in love with FingerAuth, an add-on for fingerprint login on Firefox (it even works together with DigitalPersona and the MS reader!). Check it out, maybe you find it as useful as I do and add it to your convenience list. Keep up this great list! Regards.
Comment by Gareth Lewis on August 26th, 2007:
Hi kyle nice list.
I’m a noob with all this stuff though, is there an addon which will allow me to play windows media player with firefox, say if i want to watch a application that requires media player to run it.
Comment by Kyle Eslick on August 26th, 2007:
Gareth - Check out this Windows Media Player extension. I think it probably should do what you need it to do
Comment by Ron D. McCall on August 30th, 2007:
I use to have an extension that would take me back to the exact same location I was at before I clicked on a link , restore scroll position or something like that. I also had wone that would take the mouse pointer to the next step. Like delete it would go to yes or cancel. Do you know where I could find them?
Comment by Gareth Lewis on August 31st, 2007:
Thank you kyle that was exactly what I was looking for excellent site, you’re doing a great job.
Comment by Ron Hopkins on October 17th, 2007:
Dear Sir:
Do you know of any extensions that will save data for automatic form-fill?
Thanks in advance for your time.

Comment by Annet Star on November 3rd, 2007:
I like the permatabs add-on combined with the faviconizetab add-on.
I have a group of my most used sites (gmail, gcal, pandora, delicious, facebook) - only taking a tiny space of normal tabs (thanks to faviconeizedtab) add-on - that appear automagically in the far left of the tabbar each new session and stay put (thanks to permatabs).
This way I never have to re-type their urls, I save space, and I can navigate them quickly using the ctrl-[0-9] shortcuts.
Sorry if that’s a bit muddled, I’m tired.
Great list, kyle! Thanks!

Hey check out Youlicit Firefox extension! I guess it falls under “Web 2.0″ on your list? It’s a great tool for finding similar websites based on the one you’re on. You can save your findings as well just like Del.icio.us, but Youlicit takes to the next level by providing you relevant websites so you won’t have to search as much. I find myself using Youlicit at least twice a day to find something that I don’t want to sort through in Google results.
Comment by Firefoxis#1 on November 10th, 2007:
Firefox search engines page… cool…you know something… Del.icio.us’s search function is way too slow. Why isn’t Yahoo putting their expertise to increase Del.icio.us’s search performance?
Comment by Tom McNicholas on November 17th, 2007:
My Favourite Extensions; Cooliris Previews, Paste and Go 2, Session Manager, Stealther, StumbleUpon, Tab Scope and WOT.
Favourite Theme; Gradient Brushed Metal.
Comment by Jordan Mitchell on November 26th, 2007:
Hi Kyle,
Brilliant work here! I just wanted to mention a new one to the Mozilla add-ons list called Others Online, which shows you real people, online now, relevant to each page you go to. Shows how they’re relevant, their blog, online status, and offer private IM/email too.
It’s particularly useful to bloggers who want to attract targeted traffic to their site, but then also interesting from a “people discovery” standpoint.
It’s my gig, so pls excuse the shameless promo! Would love to hear your thoughts and those of your community. Certainly not done, but is software ever done?
Comment by S3NTYN3L on December 3rd, 2007:
You should add this one to your list…
I don’t think I go a day without using it…

‘Personal menu’ should substitute ‘Tiny menu’. I would also add ‘PicLens’ to watch images and videos in a much nicer way, and finally, since you have ‘Greasemonkey’ (of course) you should not forget ‘Stylish’.
Good list.
