An Early Look at Thunderbird 3.0
May 29th, 2007
CyberNet has posted that Mozilla has updated their Thunderbird Wiki page with early details about Thunderbird 3.0.
Some of the things they are looking at in this version:
- Easier Account Setup
- Simple Extension Installation
My hope is that they are working on a tabbing system similar to the one in the Firefox web browser.

Why would mozilla be talking about a version 3 when they just recently came out with 2.0? It may have taken them a while so why would they care about a 3.0 right now?
Andy – Part of being open source is the community that drives it. There were several features that were left out of 2.0 that they want to add (hopefully including tabs!), so they always have to work towards the future. Usually companies like this break up into two teams – Those that support 2.0 and those working on 3.0.
I’m happy that they are setting a heavy pace. in my opinion, they need to until its fully comparable to Microsoft Outlook (although they will never have the integration Outlook with other systems that has unless they part with OpenOffice or something).
What in the world do tabs have to do with email?
@ Visitor – At the time this post was written, tabs were to be included in the final release of Thunderbird 3.0. This means you can have several e-mails open within the Thunderbird software (as tabs) instead of having completely new windows.
Exciting, isn’t it!?
I seem to recall talk that TB 3 was going to come out in about March 2007. I’m patient….
