1,000 Opera Widgets Now Available
February 22nd, 2007
If you’ve been using the Opera web browser for awhile now, you’ll probably remember that Opera added widgets with the release of Opera 9.0. Less than a year later, they have officially met an impressive milestone, with the 1,000th widget becoming available. For those unaware, widgets are external add-ons to a browser. Because Opera comes with most of the necessary features built in to it, their widgets can add functionality outside of the browser itself. You can find some of the most popular widgets here.
Based off the last figures I saw, it seems that Opera had roughly a 1% market share while Firefox has in the 12-15% range. While you can’t directly compare widgets to Firefox extensions, I believe Firefox currently has roughly 3,000 extensions available. The fact that Opera is over 1,000 widgets in much less time shows how great their community is, based off the number of users.
Congrats Opera on the milestone!

I still haven’t downloaded Opera… I wonder if there is any reason why one would rather have Opera over Firefox or even Internet Explorer.
Do you like Opera? How often do you use it. You are a Firefox user, so would you completely switch to Opera?

I recommend downloading Opera and giving it a try. Check out my for a more in depth look of features and benefits of the browser.
I LOVE Opera, but it doesn’t really have extensions, at least not in the same way as Firefox/Flock. Its faster, more secure, and most sites show up nicely. I really like how the bookmarks are stored when you click on the address bar as well.
For a long time I was using Flock as my primary browser until Firefox 2.0 came out. Once Flock 1.0 (which uses Firefox 2.0) comes out, I may be switching back.
Anyway, go ahead and download it and share your thoughts here (or post your thoughts on your site and trackback!!).
I know your picky when it comes to browsers, so I’d love to hear your thoughts.
Kyle,
You know… with this new laptop I just might do that… I think I will give all three a hard and heavy test. I am only picky about speed and to what extent programs eat up system resources. Back many months ago I was working with a slower desktop computer and a much slower laptop.
Back then running Firefox was horrible, and IE7 wasn’t too much better to be honest. IE6 ran great, but I can’t stand not having tabbed browsing. Firefox 1.5 was pretty good, and I never tried Opera.
So, yeah… with the new laptop, I think I will dip in there and get my hand a little dirty. There are quite a few things I don’t like about IE but deal with it… so I am going to make some good tests and figure out which browser is best for me and report back about it. I can post it here, of one one of my sites and trackback… or just comment here when done.
Talk to you soon,
Garry
