Wordpress Plugin: Group Your Posts with In Series
July 13th, 2007
Depending on the type of website you have, you may often find that you are writing a series of posts and want your readers to have easy access to the other posts in your series. Others may find that they like to break their posts into several individual parts, but want the readers to see that they are linked together.
This can be accomplished in several ways, but very few of them are efficient and easy. If you’re a Wordpress user and think that I’ve described you, you are in luck! Remstate offers a free plugin called In Series that makes this easy to accomplish.
Once you’ve uploaded and activated the plugin, the installation is done! You will then see a field called In Series in your Dashboard’s Write Post page. When writing a post that belongs in a series, you at first need to create a name for the series, then in any future installments of the series simply select it from the drop-down menu. If you’ve already written posts that belong in a series, you can go back and edit them and select the series in the drop-down menu. They will be added in the order that you’ve added them to the series, however, so you’ll want to add Part 1 first, Part 2 second, etc.
To see the plugin in action, you can view any of my Best of posts, Ultimate Guides, or Users Guides in the popular posts section of my sidebar. The plugin automatically inserts it just above the footer of your posts. I’ve been using this plugin for the last 6 months or so and have no complaints.

great, this is just what i need. Thanks for the info
Hi Kyle, this would be perfect for my Drum Corps series! Thanks for the find.
Awesome post! I just got it and installed it. Let me ask you, your best of series has the links at the bottom of the page, but mine shows it at the top (right above the post, but under the heading). How do you change this?
Raf and Mark – This is honestly one of my favorite plugins, so I’m more than happy to share it with others. Glad you’ve found it useful.
Coolio – This would have to be a theme issue. Try switching to a different theme (even if just briefly to check) and see where it places it then. The plugin places it just below the content div of your single post page, so it should work automatically. I clicked over to your site and picked an individual post, but didn’t see In Series in action.
You may have to either switch themes, or try to go in and edit the plugin.
I just installed this plugin this weekend. Thank you so much, I was trying to accomplish the same thing by hand!
@cooliojones: I know this is late but it is not your theme that is the problem. Go into the In-series admin section and edit the area under “Post Formatting”.
%content %tocThe above is what I currently have and as you see the %content (post content) is above the %toc (series output). Hope that helps anybody else that comes along and has the same question.
Gnomey – Thanks for the technical help
I haven’t upgraded this plugin since downloading it because I had to go in and manually change a bunch of stuff to get it to look the way I wanted it to.
This is definitely in the Top 5 of my most important/most used plugins and has helped me generate a huge number of additional page views by using it on my posts that get a lot of search engine traffic!
Kyle,
Ack! In Series is supposed to just work “out of the box” — what did you have to change with it? If you don’t remember, you can send me a copy via e-mail, and I can diff it with the released version to see.
I really do recommend upgrading to the latest and greatest; among several other things, it now supports post re-ordering, so you don’t have to add the posts in order anymore.
In any case, thanks for the writeup — I would’ve piped up sooner, but I just came across it today.
Quandary – Fear not, it worked fine “out of the box.”
As you can see from my titles, my Header 2 and Header 3 have been customized for a certain look. The problem is, your plugin also uses I think its a Header 3. As a result, I had to use a Header 4 to achieve the look for my titles that I was looking for.
You’re more than welcome for the write up. Thanks to you for continuing to support your plugin with updates!
As a quick follow up, I did end up upgrading my plugin and I see that I can now control it from within the options. VERY NICE!!!
Kyle,
This is the first time I have seen this plugin. I am going to have to try it out. Do you have to fiddle with any code?
Joe – Nope, once you’ve activated it, it will work out of the box!
I originally had to fiddle with some code on mine only because of my styelsheet setup, where I had to make some changes to the header used for the plugin. That is now controllable from the Options panel, so it now longer requires editing, but it wouldn’t effect many blogs either.
