Few New Notes on Firefox 3.0
August 12th, 2007
If there is one thing I follow closely on this site, it is web browsers, with Firefox probably receiving the most attention of all the web browsers out there. Firefox 3.0 will truly be an awesome display of the power of open source done right, so I am really following closely what we can expect from this browser.
Because I won’t start testing Firefox 3.0 until it reaches Beta 2, I tend to rely on a few other sites to keep me informed with the latest updates to the newest version of the popular web browser. In this case, Mozilla Links has posted a bit about the latest nightly builds that include a few updates to look forward to with the next generation version of Firefox.
- The first thing is an improved Add-on screen which will include a plugin field for easy plugin management. Plugins are already a feature in the web browser, but are not easily maintained. In Firefox 3.0, there will actually be a plugin field that allows you to manage your plugins, such as the ability to enable and disable them. Unfortunately, it looks like at this time you are not yet able to check for plugin updates, but hopefully that important feature is in the works to help us guard against security vulnerabilities.
The second thing covered is an improved download manager, which looks to be one of the core improvements to the new browser. All of the stuff you’ve come to love is still there, with most of the improvements blending nicely to the point that they are not even noticeable. It looks like downloads will now be sorted by the state of the download (active, paused, completed and canceled) with new icons also set to be included for easy identification. For download happy people, there will also be a nice search function to search your downloads.
One important note is it looks like the user interface for Places is due to be launched soon, which will be a important milestone as we roll towards Firefox 3.0 beta.  I have to say that things are coming together quite nicely. Once we get to the first beta phase, the hype should start ramping up until the actual release later this year!

I am trying hold off until the beta releases as well. Places is something I am really looking forward to try like so many others.
The download manager is one with which I had quite some problems. The pause and resume feature totally sucks, atleast in my case. Also, once the download slows down (due to another download ) it takes eternity to get back to the original speed.
I hope that this one would be better.
Vijay – It sounds like your talking about the download manager in FF2.0? It was definitely in need of some attention, hence the total revamp of it. This new one looks really well done and will probably be one of the features FF3.0 hangs it’s hat on.
I think that the new download manager features are nice, but I always setup Firefox to clear my completed downloads. That essentially takes away the usefulness of all the new features for me.
I wonder if they were able to solve the problem with memory leaks. Still, it’s my favorite browser and it looks like the next version will be a great one.
Ryan – Is setting it to clear just due to personal preference? Just curious…
Brown – It seems like every update they do fixes a few memory leaks, but there are still tens (if not hundreds) of unpatched ones. I’ve never really had much problem with memory leaks personally, but it is good to see that they are always working to remove them as they are found.
Yep, it is for the most part a personal preference. Althought a lot of tips that I’ve read have said having Firefox retain your download history can slow down the browser’s startup time after you’ve downloaded a lot of files.
