4 Free Tips To Get More Exposure For Your Blog
September 14th, 2007
This post is being submitted as a contribution to the Tips & Tricks blog writing project happening over at Daily Blog Tips.
If you’re looking for blogging tips, there are all sorts of them floating around the blogosphere. Some tips are targeted for everyone, while others may only target a small group of bloggers, but the general consensus is that content is king and will earn you the most readers. This is obviously an indisputable fact, but no matter how good your content is, it won’t do you any good if potential readers don’t know you exist. Here are a few tips for new bloggers to use to help readers discover your website:
- Link To Others When They Do Good Work/Send Trackbacks – To me, this is the most important and most rewarding way to help people find your blog. This can be done in a couple of ways:
- a) Some choose to do it on a more personal level and dedicate individual posts to highlight the work of another blogger within their niche. This way has the added benefit of better indexed with a better ranking by search engines and also allows users to comment on your individual post and strike up a discussion.
- b) The other method is to throw up a post with several links that go all over the place, such as “Daily Links” or “Weekly Links”. This method is much less personal, will not index well with search engines due to a lack of focus on keywords, and will probably not incite many comments because it usually won’t have a focused subject. The upside is that it will require a lot less work and allow you to share more “link love” than the first method.
No matter which of the two methods you use (or a combination of both), make sure your blog does not become an echo chamber. Contribute to each link in your post by adding your thoughts and opinions to the link. Once your post is ready to publish, send a trackback to each post that you link to. If you are linking to a smaller blog, the author will more than likely notice and check out your website. If it’s a larger blog, the authors probably won’t notice, but those sites will often display trackbacks and you will often get clicks from their readers who want to see others reactions to the post.
- Leave Worthwhile Comments On Other Websites - Another popular way to help people find your blog is by participating in some discussions on other blogs within your niche. Make sure that you go for quality when leaving a comment, as this shows you know what you are talking about and can get the author and other readers attention. You’ll also make a good impression if you track your comments and follow up (if necessary). I recommend using Co.mments, but CoComment is also another popular comment tracking service.
- Offer to Guest Write For Other Bloggers – What better way to show off your writing skills than to guest blog on other blogs in your niche that have a lot of subscribers? Â If your post is well written, yet unique and written in your own voice, readers will respond and pick up your feed.
- Participate In A Writing Project – There are several sites around the blogosphere that regularly run a writing project (usually monthly or bi-monthly). I recommend contributing a post to each writing project you run across. Typically when the project is complete, this will generate a load of back links by people that are picking their favorite contributions. You will also get a few extra links from people that create a post with every post contributed to the writing project.
These 4 tips were designed as free and easy ways to get people to find your website. Its important to note, however, that no matter how good you are at getting people to find your blog, people won’t stay unless the content is good. Therefore, you will want to have a decent amount of content written before you start your campaigning. Also, if you are really confident in your blog, there are other highly effective options that are not free, such as advertising with Google AdWords, Text Link Ads, or running a contest on your blog with prizes.

I’m also writing my post within 2 days for the contest. BTW I’m planning for steps 3 and 4.
I agree with all fo them. You’ve got a little bit of a ranking going on, from the most effective to the least (In my opinion). Whilst Group Writing Projects increase popularity for a short while, they don’t usually lead to more subscribers etc.
Good post!
Nirmal – Looking forward to seeing your post!
Rhys – I wasn’t necessarily intending to rank them, I just wrote them as they came to me. I guess I probably should have used bullets instead of numbers to avoid the look of ranking.
As far as writing projects leading to more subscribers, I think that depends on how similar your content is to that of the site running the project. In this example, people who read Daily Blog Tips may subscribe to other blogs that have similar content, but probably wouldn’t subscribe to sites that cover sports, celebrities, or politics (for example).
The important thing I was trying to get across is that there are many effective ways to get people to find a blog. Once they are there, only content will keep them around.
I agree with all of these as well. I used to be really good about doing these very things too. As of late though my own blog has taken a direction of ‘making money’ and not caring about what my audience, blogger friends, or readers think about that.
This post was a great reminder for me that I need to get myself connected with the blogger community again, so thank you.
These are great tips and they have all worked out for me too. Once I started to link to other blogs, they links came back on their own. This is something people don’t realize I think. Also the first group writing project I was in at Daily Blog Tips, I was a runner up and I got 10 RSS subscribers that day. So I think what Kyle says is true that if your content is similar than possibly you will gain some regulars, at least it did work out this way for me.
Commenting and linking are one of the most essential ways to get people to notice your blog, I make a point to comment on practically all of the blog posts that I read, an important point to note though that you should comment on blogs that are in your niche, this brings better targeted traffic to your blog.
Great tips!! I got you link off of Daily Blog Tip’s list:)
Apexad – Thanks for stopping by again! It really depends on what you are looking for. There is nothing wrong with making money blogging, but it can be hard to attract comments if that is your goal.
Sometimes you just have to step back and decide what your goal is with your site. Do you want to target search engine traffic, or are you blogging to engage in conversations with your readers? It is possible to reach a happy medium, but it is extremely difficult to do.
Gnomey – Well said Sarah! It also helps if your content is similar to the site that is hosting the Group Writing Project, because people are reading that site, so obviously they have an interest in that subject matter. If you run a sports site, people reading Daily Blog Tips might not be into sports to much, etc.
Michael – Great point! Yes, linking to people in your niche can go a long way to being discovered. I also have many top commentators out of my niche, but I try to leave the comments whenever possible as a sort of thank you for taking the time to engage in some conversations.
Lori – Glad you found me! Hope to see you here again in the future.
Nice information. I have had pretty good success with writing guest posts for other blogs. I’ve made an effort to find other blogs that are looking for content and that has brought new traffic as well as some good networking opportunities with other bloggers.
Steven – Great to see guest writing has worked well for you! I don’t think people realize the value in doing so. Thanks for sharing your experiences.
Great post. It will definitely help me get some more exposure. (Killer cove ya got going on here!)
Andre,
Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment. I hope you choose to come back again or subscribe to my feed!
Hi people,
I aree with all that, but i would like to also add that directory submissions are good as well to give better ranking in the search engines..
Have a great day people..:)
